In the short term, a lot of us take breaks in different ways—walks, playing music, stretching, peeing—some more often than others. But on the whole, the group tended to consider it important to their day. Though a few of us admitted to getting caught in the zone and staring our screens for far too long. The big hurdle comes, though, when clients are in the room. At that point, breaks are mostly dependent on their schedule.

Burnout also came up during the chat. The general consensus was to get far away from what we’re burned out on. The way to do that ranged from just looking away from your designs to reading/listening to books to playing games to full-on get-aways/trips. Stress can be a big part of our jobs, and reducing it as much as possible seemed important to most everyone.

This was spurred by the recent news that for any Adobe purchase beyond CS6 will require a Creative Cloud subscription. Adobe even stopped by to answer some questions… something they seem to be on top of this week with the news.

The main advantages of such a purchase have been touted quite a bit recently… easier accounting, always up-to-date availability of software, the promise of faster development cycles since one product’s release isn’t tied to the entire suite… But there was also a lot of concern and even anger over the move. The primary complaints seem to center around lack of choice, really. Some are upset about no longer getting to skip an update if you feel the cost isn’t worth it and they are tied into a payment cycle in perpetuity. There’s also uncertainty about being forced into price increases as they might occur.

While a little on the long side (over 330 tweets), the transcript is will worth the read for some of the links Adobe posted, the concerns people have, as well as some of the things people are really excited about for the upcoming Creative Cloud release.

What really got people continued work is networking with others—both other designers and people from different fields. Never underestimate the power of referrals. A lot of networking is done on Twitter and Facebook now, but there’s still a lot of those in-person events like AE user groups, meetups, and industry events like NAB. So make it a point to get to know other people! You never know when or where they can help you… just be sure you help others, too.

Members from both companies joined us to answer questions. Some highlights:

  • Work on Cineware started just after CS6 shipped. Adobe talked with Maxon to see how they could improve workflow between After Effects and Cinema 4D. Maxon saw it as a natural extension of what they’ve already been doing.
  • Cineware is a self-contained Cinema 4D render engine, but does not support Physical Renderer yet.
  • Adobe posted this list of detail on Cinema 4D integration with After Effects (answer a lot of questions on its own).
  • Cineware is CPU based (for now), multithreaded. No GPU rendering (yet). (Did you get those parenthetical qualifiers? OpenGL support is a high priority.)
  • You can essentially use Dynamic Link to bring C4D files into Premiere Pro.
  • ‘Centered Comp Camera’ will do the math to align C4D’s world coordinates (0,0,0) with AE’s (half comp width/height, 0).
  • Net Render will not work from within Cineware (at least for now).
  • C4D plugins are not currently supported in Cineware.
  • AE will look for a commercial install of C4D (Broadcast, Studio, etc) and launch that before trying to launch C4D Lite.
  • Multiple instances of a C4D scene will utilize Global Performance Cache, provided settings are the same.
  • You can choose which specific C4D cameras to use in Cineware or use an AE camera.
  • Registering Cinema 4D Lite will unlock some Mograph features.
  • Cineware layers can be time-remapped, interpreted, and conformed, just like any other footage-based layer.
  • Cineware is a 1.0 release. Lots of room to grow.
  • And yes, #MoChat did trend.
