Last night on #MoChat we talked about time-saving tips in After Effects. Todd Kopriva also came out to post some helpful links.

…and more in the transcript.

A lot of people have at least two monitors with their AE timeline filling one, as well as custom workspaces to fit their needs. Background renderers let you work while something is rendering. Certain scripts like Ease & Wizz, duik, ft-toolbar and more definitely help speed up certain tasks. While some people will make their own templates for reusing assets/animation, most stay away from buying AE project file templates. Prerendering certain complicated assets once their locked will help speed up your comp.

There’s a lot more knowledge in the transcript below.

Lets get this started up in here 🙂 #mochat7:59 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I put all that I know about working faster with After Effects here; hardware optimization to workflow tips: http://t.co/qkxSOwtQwh #mochat9:00 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Welcome to #MoChat everyone. Tonight we’re talking working smarter & faster in .9:00 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

There’s a lot of ways to save time working in . Let’s start with tuning your computer. How do you have AE set up? #MoChat9:00 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

How about I tweet from the right account? Was about to bring up the link that posted earlier. But he beat me to it. #mochat9:01 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Here are resources about hardware for After Effects (and Photoshop and Premiere Pro) for best performance: http://t.co/h8aToiZnkV #mochat9:01 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Heh. I’m speedy. 😉 #mochat9:02 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Pun intended? 😉 #mochat9:02 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

LOL #fail the man behind the curtain has fallen!! #mochat9:02 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Of course. #mochat9:03 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

For me it is essential to have at least two monitors with my timeline completely on one monitor. Then my tools & display on the 2nd. #mochat9:03 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

On the topic of memory settings in After Effects, this might be the best place to start: http://t.co/M9ySQ4LDSi #mochat9:03 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Aside from maxing out RAM, setting up a cache on an SSD is great. Even though it sometimes gets corrupt. #mochat9:03 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I work the same way, at least when I’m not roaming on a laptop. #mochat9:04 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Regarding cache problems, be _sure_ to install the 11.0.2 update. Lots of fixes for cache problems in the updates. #mochat9:04 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Take advantage of a background renderer. Get your work down let the computer render, then you realize you can do more.. #mochat9:04 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I have. But I still occasionally get frames that refuse to update. #mochat9:05 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

… and, if you can afford it, a Fusion IO ioFX device is even better than an SSD for the cache. Screaming fast. #mochat9:05 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I kinda force myself to work in 1 window.. so when Im on a laptop its not as bother some. I tend to work 50-50 on each #mochat9:05 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Heh, the first part of that tweet being the key… #mochat9:05 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yeah, laptops kill my workflow for sure. #mochat9:06 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

BG Renderer has been a huge part of my workflow for a while now. #mochat9:06 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

With specific plug-ins? Trapcode has a few bugs still, I think. Be sure to tell us with a bug: http://t.co/5IMhyWdOXg #mochat9:06 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Come to think of it, I think it was particular & Form quite often. #mochat9:06 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I generally like to have my effect controls panel right next to my display for quick adjustments. Wish parameters displayed there! #mochat9:07 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

It’s not too bad. ` just becomes my best friend. #mochat9:07 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

yeah makes a world of difference IMO. RenderQ for mac. BG renderer I even have a script for the PC that launches it easily. #mochat9:07 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

There was a thread on ‘s Unite forums that had people sharing their AE layouts. I should dig that up. #mochat9:08 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Whew! Known issues. Be sure to updte plug-ins, too. The plug-in makers are working as fast as they can to fix these issues. #mochat9:08 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

That is very wise, but I don’t have too much trouble crossing over. I just have elbow room with two monitors. #mochat9:08 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Layouts are coming up. How many of you have customized your layout to be more efficient for you? #mochat9:09 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : Career Center Home – Missouri State Teachers Association #edchat #mochat http://t.co/iJ2uN4wB0W via 9:09 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Its worse though when you get into 3d like C4D and you need your browser, timeline, xpresso, etc open. Hard to juggle #mochat9:09 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Definitely. With several panels docked throughout. #mochat9:09 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

FWIW, when I help people troubleshoot slow systems, the majority of the time, the disk/bus is the bottleneck. Often not thought of. #mochat9:10 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yeah, I’m with the others. It’s nice to have the timeline on a monitor of its own. #mochat9:10 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I use 2 monitors, a 40″ LCD for testing and 4TB External pegasus raid. #MoChat9:10 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I shared it with you once… I shall do it again here #mochat9:10 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I have my AE layout switched up but don’t have many scripts panels docked. #mochat9:11 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

People put too much emphasis on GPU for After Effects. With exception of ray-traced 3D renderer, having sweet GPU matters little. #mochat9:12 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Reposition Anchor Point, Rift, duik, Ease & Wizz, and ft-toolbar are my main ones. #mochat9:12 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

… compared to CPU, RAM, and disks, anyway. Max those out bfore fretting about getting an expensive GPU. #mochat9:12 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Ive been getting use to the ~ key that brings the selected menu fullscreen.. helps in a pinch with single monitor.. #mochat9:13 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

That’s a good point. But with more plugins using GPU (E3D, Plexus) it’s nice to have a good one. #mochat9:13 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

all of the monitors! #mochat http://t.co/7KIe1LAmxh9:13 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

what about maxing out cache? #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

haven’t really had a major need to. Yet. I’m sure if I spend more time in AE, I’ll make adjustments! #MoChat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I even use that key on dual monitor setups for the comp window, too. Also remapped C4D to use that key. #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Ease & Wizz and Duik are a must! #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yes, but often good enough costs far less than people think they need. #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Love that one! #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

beast! #mochat9:14 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yes, the cache is one reason to emphasize lots of RAM and fast drives/bus. #mochat9:15 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I really want to get Octane Render, it seems like the future of how we will render. #mochat9:15 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I tried three monitors once. Couldn’t make it work. #mochat9:15 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Very old project, but you can see my layout more or less here. #mochat http://t.co/IFuu9ut59P9:16 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Can’t work with multiple monitors. One is good enough for me. #mochat9:16 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

heh probably better results than when I tried to setup C4D with an AE layout.. I made it & still got lost.. 8) #mochat9:16 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

it should be said that gpu makes a HUGE difference when you are using raytrace. #mochat9:17 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

really?! I hate single monitors, it drives me nuts. #mochat9:17 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

WOW! I would love that so when working C4D to have a window for everything 🙂 #mochat9:17 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I have a tendacy to F#ck up my workspace windows so its easy to just reset the “standard” window.. #mochat9:17 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yes, I called that out as the primary exception. GPU details for After Effects here: http://t.co/kATCs9AcIj #mochat9:18 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yes, that. I just reset and shuffle things around quickly. #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

But, even then, people tend to overspend when they could do quite nicely with a less xpensive option, as your table shows. #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

that.. that cat is just.. shes.. just staring… at me… #gulp #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

howdy #mochat peeps… only dropping in for a moment…9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

(I mean the Google doc that you and Danny have posted.) #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I tried it. Just didn’t work for me. #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

My biggest problem with custom workspaces is using someone else’s machine. #mochat9:19 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

he! That’s Little Charlie Darwin and he wont leave me alone while I work #mochat9:20 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Beyond layouts, it is essential to make AE templates and effects that I reuse over again in future projects with minor adjustments. #mochat9:20 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I almost mentally break down when using other peoples computers, and NEVER let someone use mine. #mochat9:20 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

So what small things do you do that speed up your workflow? Certain expressions? Presets? Scripts? #mochat9:20 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

this is true. Depending on what you need/want the most expensive gpu is not necessarily the best. #mochat9:21 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

aye.. see that why the standard workspace is fine for me.. its the same layout where ever. #mochat9:21 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

It might be in the future, http://t.co/StUhnC8azT #mochat9:21 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Same here. Working on a different layout kills me. #mochat9:21 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I make lots of use of preview modes to speed up preview rendering. I work at lower resolutions & frame rates, depending. #mochat9:22 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Have preset AE project files w/”Control” comp that has all the brand colors. Then I link Fills with expressions. #mochat9:22 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Lots of copy and paste of keyframes. Hotkeys! Learn them! Opt/replace assets from project panel to TL. All foundational! #mochat9:22 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

prerenders. Once I have something locked, I’ll do a prerender to avoid processing all of the each time. #mochat9:22 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

“time*__” is my goto expression.. also adding “+value” to any expression I make.. saves headache in the longrun #mochat9:22 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I turn off every application I don’t need. http://t.co/IKRZ1hPqON People don’t realize how much a web browser hogs of RAM and CPU. #mochat9:23 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

this sound like a workflow for RED as well.. I havent delved into proxies. I need to start doing this. #mochat9:24 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

If anyone wants in on the shared plugin folder I run on dropbox, DM me your emails and Ill add you. #mochat9:24 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

particularly chrome! Also how much gpu ram Safari uses (all of it!) #mochat9:24 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I use work areas and regions of interest to limit what is rendered: http://t.co/AEzKSboMO8 #mochat9:24 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I don’t use regions as much as I should. Work areas however… #mochat9:25 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Take this man up on his offer! Its awesome! #mochat9:25 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : If anyone wants in on the shared plugin folder I run on dropbox, DM me your emails and Ill add you. #mochat9:25 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yep. If I had one tip to give tonight it would be to turn off your web browser when using video software. #mochat9:26 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

ack… I meant to hash tag that last tweet.. sorry #mochat9:26 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

aww but they just fixed that in premiere you can now surf the web while playback is going.. #bestfixever 8) #mochat9:27 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yeah, its a goldmine! Or as Justin puts it… His Penthouse of plugins 🙂 #mochat9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

That is huge. Having iStat Menus open and seeing how many resources Safari/Chrome use is crazy. #mochat9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I’m torn. On one hand Decomposetext is great for saving time breaking up the sentences on the other the expressions slow it all down #mochat9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : If anyone wants in on the shared plugin folder I run on dropbox, DM me your emails and Ill add you. #mochat9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

these are my custom workspaces lately…. #mochat http://t.co/vjQvx0FhxD9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Yeah. Too many expressions can really bog a comp down. #mochat9:28 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

One of my other huge timesavers is using … but I’m just a tiny bit biased on that one… 😉 #mochat9:30 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

good lordy mighty… #bowsDown 8) #mochat9:30 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

How do you go about separating words/sentences to their own layer? (sorry if it’s off topic) #mochat9:30 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

It is really important to learn expressions and slider controls. Really saves time and extra work/revisions! #mochat.9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Here’s a video in which I nag people about how to work faster by being responsible and planning: http://t.co/YMyxzJnbZc #mochat9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Sometimes duplicating and masking. I don’t often work with lots of type. #mochat9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

#watchesAsConigsPatsHisOwnBack 8) its good stuff btw.. #mochat9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Just a bit biased. 😉 But it’s a good app. I recommend it. #mochat9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : One of my other huge timesavers is using … but I’m just a tiny bit biased on that one… 😉 #mochat9:31 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

been a CRAZY day today and tomorrow is even worse… or better… or worse… errr… time for me to go drink. #mochat9:32 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : It is really important to learn expressions and slider controls. Really saves time and extra work/revisions! #mochat.9:32 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

return key + duplicate layer? 8) #mochat9:32 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I was just surprised it didn’t really exist until then. #mochat9:32 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

My favorite quote from the Hunger Games “May the dark beers be ever in your favor” #mochat9:33 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I work with a wacom tablet in AE and it helps to customize it for faster workflow. #mochat http://t.co/NrzXesIvYX9:34 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

One thing I need to work on for speed… sometimes keyframing can be a lot faster than spending time writing complicated expressions. #mochat9:34 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

aye and use that picwhip like you’re Indy in the Temple of Doom.. #LiveItLoveItLearnIt #mochat9:34 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I get caught in that loop, its 50/50 on it actually helping. #mochat9:34 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Other than setting modifier key combos to express keys, I haven’t customized my Wacom much. #mochat9:35 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Especially when building things to be procedural/flexible when it doesn’t need to be… #mochat9:35 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I get a glitch once in a while with my wacom & c4d spinning outta control or shooting off into space. #sorryofftopic #mochat9:35 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : aye and use that picwhip like you’re Indy in the Temple of Doom.. #LiveItLoveItLearnIt #mochat9:36 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I do a ton of xpresso in C4D using Sin/Cos curves for simple consistent animation movements. Saves a ton of time. #mochat9:36 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

What driver version are you on? I’ve had issues on anything above 6.3.3. #mochat9:37 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I get trapped by this too. Current rule is to try to only write expressions when they’ll be reusable elsewhere. #mochat #mochat9:37 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

do you use BGrender pro? like using the texting or email messages when renders are done? #mochat9:37 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Really? I was the same at first. But it really helps to sit back with just the tablet and forget the keyboard. #mochat9:38 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I have a growl-boxcar service set up so if the computer is idle for more than 5 minutes, it sends a push notification. #mochat9:38 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

then today I spent an hour trying to get a % sign behind a number in a C4D countdown. Keyed it instead… 🙁 #mochat9:38 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Same here. I turned off all the touch/keys/wheel functionality. #mochat9:38 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

idk.. its a mac.. I can has drivers? I’ll check it out.. thanks for the tip #mochat9:38 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

How do you have your express keys set up? #mochat9:39 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I had that problem once. Forgot how I trouble shot it… But I did, and haven’t had a problem since. #mochat9:39 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I was optimistic about touch on the i5 at first, but turned that off after a couple weeks. #mochat9:39 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

No no no.. I cannot forget the kb… I love my kb too much otherwise what would your left-hand do? #mochat9:40 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Most of them are on the radial star popup menu. #mochat9:40 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

my cat does this to me if I have touch on..http://t.co/Ot6IeqTt6K #mochat9:41 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

also delegating helps in saving time.. if you can break a huge project into smaller steps and pass that #ish around. #mochat9:41 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

haha I know what you mean! #mochat #catlife9:42 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

your cat rocks at “dance dance kitty-lution” #perfect #mochat9:42 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Anyone having luck with AE render farm yet? Could be a time saver, but something always seems to go wonky for me. #mochat9:43 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Does anyone use stock AE project files? I’m really reluctant to go down that road. #mochat9:43 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Any questions about performance for us? #mochat9:43 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

anyone out there use pre-render to help speed things up.. I think I saw someone mention it.. maybe i missed it. #mochat9:43 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Never got one to work well. Missing fonts or plugins can be a big problem. #mochat9:43 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Never used them. Feels way too dirty. lol #mochat9:44 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Since I recognize various templates on such shows as The Colbert Report, I can tell you that some folks use stock projects. #mochat9:44 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

What’s the tipping point where multiprocessing makes a difference? (Spawning processes/disk hits vs render time.) #mochat9:44 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

For complicated precomps, sometimes. Proxies, too. #mochat9:45 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I feel like it would be way too easy to fall back on… and harder to make stand out & look different. #mochat9:46 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

The Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature shines when individual frame takes much CPU & little RAM. #mochat9:46 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Nope! Might make sense for editing or news workflow tho #mochat9:47 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Pre-rendering is great for when you’re certinly done with something and don’t want to rerender it for each preview. #mochat9:47 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

1 skip existing files B: Render out a seq. C: All computers map to the same HD letter. 4. dont use a root folder #mochat9:47 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

working with 4K sized images, in 32bit, it seems that having multiproc is particularly slow. Any best practices? #mochat9:47 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

The new global performance cache makes prerendering a bit less necessary (though not obsolete, certainly). #mochat9:47 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

well see theres the rub.. Im never sure.. but I’ll give it a go.. #mochat9:48 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

You’re describing a heavy RAM and heavy disk throughput scenario. Likely, the CPU isn’t the bottleneck, so MP less useful. #mochat9:49 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

it depends on the budget and creative direction of the project at hand if I would use them or not #mochat9:49 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

RT : Does anyone use stock AE project files? I’m really reluctant to go down that road. #mochat9:49 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

wait theres stock projects? ppl at work have started this.. I wrinkle my nose at the practice.. feels dirty. #mochat9:49 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

In general, start with the feature turned off, then add one process at a time and monitor times in a simple test. #mochat9:50 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Has there ever been a chart/infographic/venn diagram on when MP works best? #mochat9:50 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I agree. In a fast paced environment, they may work. #mochat9:50 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

disks can definitely keep up. 48GB of ram. It seems like something else is dragging, also becomes unstable. #mochat9:50 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

that’s a great diagnostic tip. Thanks Todd. #mochat9:51 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

only If I can find the right jumpback to render them over… #mochat9:51 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Hmmm. Disks can keep up, but what about bus? #mochat9:51 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

On occasion. Sometimes I organize several related, but separate, projects—use renders from one as assets for the other. #mochat9:51 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

if anything I would rather use stock elements over projects. I feel that at least helps the creative process #mochat9:52 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Also, depending on what format (RED?) the codec can be very ill behaved in honoring memory limits. #mochat9:52 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

We’re in the final few minutes. What’s the one thing you don that saves most time in ? #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

exactly. It’s tough to pinpoint bottle neck. Demands for high res have gone up, but HW isn’t really keeping up. #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

DPX, or EXR in this case. #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Conversely, what’s a question you have about saving time? #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Ahh that makes sense good to know thanks. #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

And be sure to read this: http://t.co/Z6mdRZY5pa … and the item linked to in the first paragraph. #mochat9:53 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

agreed, the right stock ELEMENTS can really push a project forward quickly #mochat9:54 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

Ah. EXR performance has been a bottleneck. Make sure to get fnordware’s v1.7 plug-in. Faster. We ship v1.5 with AE CS6. #mochat9:55 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

For sure — but I think it’d take me more time to hunt down useful stock projects than to make them myself! #mochat9:55 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

yup, first thing I did! 🙂 #mochat9:56 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

well in the long run, organization is king. I render all text separately from my bugs. that way any changes I just render new text. #mochat9:57 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

I’d say the one thing that saves most time for me is keeping projects organized. #mochat9:57 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

#mochat will likely be having a #postchat re: today’s autodesk event in Montreal #3dsmax9:58 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013

bugs?? srsly auto spell?? from my background. aka bkgs #mochat9:58 PM EDT Mar 26th, 2013
