This week’s MoChat on how we would improve After Effects was popular. All-in-all, there were over 400 tweets (including RTs) in the chat. Both Todd Kopriva (Product Manager – Pro Video) and Steve Forde (Product Manager – After Effects) were able to join us. There were a lot of suggestions thrown around.

The suggestions in rough order of how important they seemed to people by tally count:

  1. More clear Memory/Multi-Processing settings
  2. Xpresso-like controls for Expressions
  3. Improvements to interacting with Shape Layers (separate panel for settings, etc.)
  4. Improvements to curves/graph editor
  5. Node-based FX (probably not going to happen any time soon, but maybe Instances of FX?)
  6. Better 3D navigation/visual guides (grids, etc)
  7. Better OpenEXR support

There were numerous other requests, but too many to list here. A few links were passed around to address some of the requests in the mean time. Using Zorro to better manage layers, searching for parameters to drill down to shape controls, the 3D Widgets script for help in 3D space, the Duplicate with Connections script for pseudo-effect instances, ProEXR for better OpenEXR support, and tricking AE to use the GPU in background rendering (at your own risk, of course).

Also, ways to contact Adobe, using the Adobe forums, and the Product Improvement Program will all help get your ideas on improving After Effects into Adobe’s hands.

Now, the transcript. We’ve made a couple changes to the usual format. First, straight RTs have been removed. Second, the transcript is (or should be) inside a scrollable view so the page isn’t enormous. And lastly, we added a link directly to each tweet in the date/time text to better see it in context. Let us know if this works better for you or any ideas you have for improvements to or future topics for MoChat.

The Transcript

Welcome to tonight’s #MoChat on how you’d improve . Remember, you can submit feedback many ways: http://t.co/1kU9IawZ8:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Let’s get this started… what are some of the ways you’d change AE to work better? Any particular workflow issues? #mochat8:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I know last week a few of us were talking about Shape layers and how cumbersome they can get. #MoChat8:01 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Just in – backing up Mr. Kopriva aka AdobeAE! #mochat8:02 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We’ve got product manager Steve Forde () on as well as me, the After Effects hivemind. #mochat8:03 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Hi . Mind giving us a brief background on you? #mochat8:03 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Cumbersome in what way(s)? #mochat8:04 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Folders as tabs would brighten my day. Let’s not have premiere get all the fun. #MoChat8:04 PM Jul 24th, 2012

So how’s this work? Just say something and put #mochat after it?8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Could you explain that a little more? #mochat8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

With anything beyond simple shapes, hierarchy can build up fast, making it difficult to navigate. #MoChat8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’m the Sr. Product Manager for Visual Effects at Adobe – meaning I am responsible for After Effects #mochat8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat #AE I’d like to right-click on an asset in the timeline and select Reload Footage instead of Reveal Layer Source in Project first…8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like a batch replace function. Maybe it’s there and I’m missing it. #mochat8:05 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Shape Layers parameters are way buried in the timeline. #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

shape layers for the love of all that it’s holy to all gods! #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

So it’s the management of the group structure that is bothersome? Any specific suggestions for improvement? #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d love to see some shape layer improvements and an update to the text animation system. #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I understand that title recently changed. Should we take that as a sign of things to come? #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Be sure to welcome and to #mochat. It’s great that they could join us.8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I find that using the search field allows me to get straight to the properties I want in shape layers. Not for you? #mochat8:06 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like to see shapes act more like an effect than a layer style type of drop down #mochat8:07 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Such as what, specifically? #mochat8:07 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You can Alt-drag a footage item to an item in the Project panel to replace all uses of an item. Not what you meant? #mochat8:07 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Nah – someone handed it out in the titles dept – lol. AE is my thing 🙂 #mochat8:07 PM Jul 24th, 2012

It’s a bit difficult to say. I didn’t think about searching. Makes it easier than drilling down. #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

in the project window. It’d be great if the folders in there could be torn off as a docakble tab #MoChat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Is there any thought to having shape management outside of the timeline panel? #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

not exactly what I meant… but that’s really useful. Thanks for that tip! #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

thanks for joining in! Nothing better than conversing with the source! #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I actually enjoy AE’s timeline. Detailed when you need it. Minimal when you don’t. #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You mean have the shape operators in the Effects & Presets panel and Effect Controls panel? Or something else? #mochat8:08 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Got it. #mochat8:09 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I do use search and it’s handy but never used it on shape layer parameters #mochat8:09 PM Jul 24th, 2012

hmm you make a valid point… I just haven’t used it since I animated 2D characters and that was really hard. #mochat8:09 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You can also define filters in the search filed for arbitrary sets of parameters. They’re basically saved searches. #mochat8:09 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Interesting…perhaps also folders in the timeline for layers? #mochat8:09 PM Jul 24th, 2012

how about a scratchpad. a panel where you cab drag and drop items such as expressions, colors, keyframes, etc. #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

by the way, thanks for stopping by and 🙂 #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Bggest thing for me would be more uniformity between all the programs. Not fully the same but more relatable in design & function #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

like an anim preset but its saved with project vs outside of the file #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

yeah I think that would help with decluttering up the timeline window for a atart #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Anyone who wants to manage their timeline better & isn’t using Zorro–well, you should. http://t.co/n6sv8da1 #mochat8:10 PM Jul 24th, 2012

So color management in AE is actually pretty darn good now… but with ACES coming up in color world, any thought to adding support? #mochat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Regarding timelines, steal from PPro. At least have customizable keyboards with PPRo templates. Easier to mind map once, not twice #MoChat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Hey! Don’t lead the witness! 😉 #mochat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I haven’t done tons of 2D character anim, but the few I have I think the power is in precomps and expression controls #mochat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

MOCHAT | I’d love to be able to hit the space-bar and have source footage/audio just play… as it does in Premiere Pro #mochat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Yeah, I like that idea. There are some scripts that do pieces of that. #mochat8:11 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Well I precomped the crap out of those character rigs, and used expressions. It was still not so fun. #Mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We’ll turn that back on you: Do you need it? #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

😉 #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I think it’s there’s quite many dropdowns, maybe some type of delete history for shape layers; create 1 shape from all. #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Us, too. 😉 #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

yes!!! The same functionality as layer folders in photoshop #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

But it did work. Props to AE for that 🙂 Versatility is the bomb! #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

oh could that be used in some sort of node/layers hybrid model? #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That sounds amazing. #mochat8:12 PM Jul 24th, 2012

How do you save a filter from the search box? #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

not a script. needs to be built in functionality. many times u go hunting for something to copy and paste. drag drop reuse #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Having dialogs be non-modal would greatly help workflow & get rid of frivolous dialog items #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

1st step could be something reducing the amount of clicks/twirls: shapes are super powerful but not accessible #MoChat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Holy balls! RT Anyone who wants to manage their timeline better & isn’t using Zorro–well, you should. http://t.co/yyLEDgYO #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Adobe has a big presence in regards to ACES etc – color a very big deal – especially since Speedgrade joined the suite. #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Agreed. I know it would be a huge undertaking, but similar panels & shortcuts would be great. #mochat8:13 PM Jul 24th, 2012

like an inspector panel perhaps? 🙂 #mochat8:14 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like it for what it’s worth. Would mean better interchange between grading and compositing. #mochat8:14 PM Jul 24th, 2012

sorta but it becomes a vertical bear. With big projects Need more functional macro view. Like flow chart. But better. #MoChat8:14 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Try doing a few searches and then look at the list of auto-complete searches that appear. http://t.co/sXKppfyT #mochat8:14 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Uh que bueno esto! #mochat8:15 PM Jul 24th, 2012

re Zorro – absolutely – BIG recommend. #mochat8:15 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Oh, I agree. I was just pointing out that others have seen the need and started filling parts of it. #mochat8:15 PM Jul 24th, 2012

heres a simple one. when you unlink scale and invert one side, relink. then use cmd+ or – it should retain the proportions. not now #mochat8:15 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Any way to get it to save more than 10 searches? #mochat8:16 PM Jul 24th, 2012

is the auto-complete only in CS6? #mochat8:16 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Not sure. I’ll look into that when we’re done here. I don’t want to dive into After Effects UI now and lose the conversation #mochat8:16 PM Jul 24th, 2012

totally. Although ps, AI, and AE are all adobe, they’re not as seamless in workflow/UI as they could #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I wish you could drag filters from layers to other layers. Maybe I’m too used to fcp. #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

when playing back with the comp panel maximizied add a timeline like in footage so you can scrub. or drag timecode area at least #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that would be nice! To retain scale relationship once relinked #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Here’s a loaded question: Who wants us to change how we deal with memory and multiprocessing? #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You can copy and paste. #mochat8:17 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that could be part of more drag and drop functionailty #mochat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You beat me to it! 😉 #mochat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that is an area of particular black magic to get to work right. so, YES. #MoChat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that is too loaded for 140 chars #mochat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

welcome , AdobeAE. In terms of gripes of workflow is having less clutter on the screen, similar to what Premiere Pro did.. #MOCHAT8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

definitely. Shapes could really use it’s own custom interface of some sort. #MoChat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

No. It’s certainly in CS5.5, too. #mochat8:18 PM Jul 24th, 2012

me! I find it confusing trying to figure out situations when I should use it and shouldn’t. I turn it off altogether now #mochat8:19 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Which part of the Premiere Pro CS6 UI change do you like most and would want us to consider copying? #mochat8:19 PM Jul 24th, 2012

also in cs6 I’ve been having tons of PNGIO errors and I don’t know why #mochat8:19 PM Jul 24th, 2012

exactly. That’s why I think so many ppl are afraid to try new programs. I avoid AI for years cause it was alien #mochat8:19 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I will state that I am think there is room for HUGE improvement in MP and Memory – all on the team agree too #mochat8:19 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We took in a lot of user feedback in After Effects CS5.5 and changed the defaults for memory and multiprocessing. Still hard, though #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Yes Please #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

copy and paste… so keyboard driven guys. What happens when we need to run it on iPad? #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’m raising my hand: RT Here’s a loaded question: Who wants us to change how we deal with memory and multiprocessing? #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Oh, absolutely. #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

a great example is what they did with SpeedGrade. They brought in enough AE/Adobe designs to make me feel at home #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

the idea of simplifying and streamlining… and an that media panel 😉 #mochat8:20 PM Jul 24th, 2012

ok, have CS5 here. Will try it when I get home. #mochat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

MP Is definitely some kind of voodoo. Only recently realized it would only support physical cores, not HT. #mochat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

ha! Id like to reference/instance effects w/o having to wire them together every time. Sorta like 3DS Max modifiers #MoChat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

its a great start so far. its a lot of trial and error. maybe some presets/standards to start off with? #MoChat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

PNG in Ae errors – or across the suite? #mochat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Totally agree on this.RT definitely. Shapes could really use it’s own custom interface of some sort. #MoChat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

For troubleshooting, bring issues to the After Effects forum, and we can help you there: http://t.co/3JJi5vfR #mochat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Tonight’s #mochat is popular. Getting hard to keep up!8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

no doubt! AE Users unite! #MoChat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

the ability to freeze or zero out object transforms. #mochat8:21 PM Jul 24th, 2012

BOOM. #MoChat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

borrow some of the dreamweaver code for autocomplete and easier expression writing #mochat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I don’t like how much experimentation goes into finding the sweet spot for ram allocation. It should “just work” #mochat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That’s another one popular among us on the team. #mochat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Actually, instances in shape layers would be great, too! More flexible than copy-paste. #mochat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Also much room for improvement – key is – efficiency – too many clicks to do simple tasks #mochat8:22 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Expressions an get you half-way there. #mochat8:23 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat multiprocessing yes. Like EJ, I get confused why it should speed up renders but it hinders them. I leave it off8:23 PM Jul 24th, 2012

well to build in the scratchpad, v2 can have linked params 🙂 back to the ones in the pad #mochat8:23 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The main thing I’ve wanted in AE/PS/AI for years is a sortable/editable font list, within the program #mochat8:23 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Auto-complete in expressions would be great! I’m tempted to write a dictionary for Coda 2 for more lengthy expressions. #mochat8:23 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Any chance for world grid, horizon line, & navigation system similar to 3D packages? People starting w 3D get disoriented easily #MoChat8:24 PM Jul 24th, 2012

as much as i love my loop expressions those should really be in the GE like in maya etc #mochat8:24 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Yeah, multiprocessing is confusing sometimes because it doesn’t help in cases where the bottleneck isn’t CPU power. #mochat8:24 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’m glad to hear say this. I thought I was dumb. I generally have it off. #mochat8:24 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d actually really love the ability to apply expressions to layer drop downs in effects… or at least pick-whip to other layers. #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

how about code sense/auto complete for expressions instead of digging through the menu? #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

wish it was all under the hood. Always leave it off. #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like to see how the font looks as well in the drop down like in c4d #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

holy smokes, freeze transform would be great. I’m sticking tons of extra nulls in hierarchies to do this now #MoChat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

for folks with expressions, do you like Expresso in C4D? #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

It seems the HD & RAM is more often the bottleneck once MP is enabled. #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

+1! RT : borrow some of the dreamweaver code for autocomplete and easier expression writing #mochat8:25 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Nope. Not dumb. It’s a common area of confusion. I try to demystify performance stuff here: http://t.co/cz92kmzN #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

On fonts: 10 most recent fonts at top of font list, and ability to set css-like styles across a project. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Even if I could just make like a “per job” font group. Like if I’m working on a brand that uses 3 fonts, etc. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The ability to create and use animation sets for keying groups of attributes with a single key. Great for animation. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat looooove xpresso8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

24GB of ram and a dedicated RAID 10 media drive? That’s why I just gave up. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The hard disk is very, very, very, very often the bottleneck. When I troubleshoot people’s renders, I find that a lot. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’m an Xpresso addict I think a node based expression setup in AE would be one of the best decisions the AE team could make #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat oh man, multiprocessor is such a crapshoot. It’s a per project basis.8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Absolutely! It’s almost like a visual, node-based expression. But they can get complicated fast… and scare people away. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

How bout the ability to toggle effects on multiple tracks. Select layers and search effect too slow. #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Also great suggestions – 3D navigation got a little love in CS 6 – but plenty room for more #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

+1 RT : Any chance for world grid, horizon line, & navigation system similar to 3D packages? #MoChat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

It seems the HD & RAM is more often the bottleneck once MP is enabled. <– this #mochat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

speaking of nulls, Id buy a beer if I could have customizable null shapes in addition to the standard top left corner square #MoChat8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Mostly being able to have a customization on toolbars, instead of having a panel, using a standard playback icons. #MOCHAT8:26 PM Jul 24th, 2012

MOCHAT | xpresso-style from #cinema4d would be a great step #mochat8:27 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d love to see an option for the brush tool that it doesn’t create an effect on a layer, instead a specific “Brush Stroke” layer. #mochat8:27 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Actually, here’s one. The watch folder in AE combined with server based media. Any way to not “collect” the media? #mochat8:27 PM Jul 24th, 2012

isnt the null just a comp thats invisible though? Seems to be a work around they built in. #mochat8:27 PM Jul 24th, 2012

being able to disable things like certain things like current time, flow chart, reset exposure. #MOCHAT8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Curious what you would do with that… since a null is just a transparent 100×100 white solid. #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I like beer 🙂 #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

@ AdobeAE I think AE’s 3D UI needs a drastic over haul. coming from #C4D, I feel crippled. #MoChat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d be thrilled to parent, pipe, or pick whip in the current node view. One to many is easy to setup/diagnose #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

paint in comp panel perhaps too? #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I also think the animation curves need some work. Need to be easier to work with. #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Wow you shot up late a feel like you have no idea what is going on #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d love mograph Cloner type functionality in AE for footage layers, not just shape layers #mochat8:28 PM Jul 24th, 2012

and nodes in general! RT : MOCHAT | xpresso-style from #cinema4d would be a great step #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Consider that the 3D in After Effects CS6 is just a single step and not intended to be a full-featured 3D application. #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

if you had to pick 1 thing that is most valuable for 3D nav – which is it? gimble? #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

super simple one. when in flowchart add “reveal in comp panel” to the contextual menu. its like you dont want us to use it! #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Check this out for 3D widgets: http://t.co/1GaZWgUe #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

How, exactly? Separable axes? Something else? #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

shape layer repeaters to have 3 dimensions? #mochat8:29 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Would it be possible to create project wide variables for expressions? Or type expressions in effects panel #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I meant the Navigation. proper 4 up, grids, etc #MoChat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d love to see an option for the brush tool that it doesn’t create an effect, instead a specific “brush stroke” layer #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

now if that can work with Element… #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

agreed. I’ve become to like c4d curves system much better #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

yeah that’d be great as well #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You keep saying my favorites. #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

resizable views when you choose anything other than 1? #mochat8:30 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Oh man, did I miss the expression chat? #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

graph editor could stand for a big boost – its gotten better but it’s halfway there #Mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I actually wrote & suggested that a while ago: http://t.co/0QrgaY8O #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

MOCHAT | You may increase the assigned RAM per render core by default. 1GB is bit low. If you working with a 4core you assigne 2GB #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thanks for that…both the link and for claiming I’m not dumb ;P #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Xpresso is so awesome even a dumb guy like me figured it out 😉 #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Why not? Element uses the comp 3D. #MoChat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

What is that #mochat website? 8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Specifically? We hear that a lot, but we have a hard time getting details. #mochat8:31 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Dude. Pay attention in class! http://t.co/oANqucvC #mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

haha yah and your Xpresso was really good for how new you are to it! No bugs #mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

rigging in most 3D programs give you a variety of null shapes to discern different types of controls. I’d love to have in AE #Mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that or camera navigation. #c4d‘s camera nav, with zoom/ orbit to cursor would be huge #MoChat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I think the curves work great, but I think it’s more of a personal preference thing #mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That’s an opportunity for a script. Should be simple using guide layers. I might have to work on that.#mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

anyone interested in multi user/project support? i know theres something on aescripts but this also needs to be further integrated #mochat8:32 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Got it – thats great feedback. #mochat8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

there’a bits of it in AE – Shape Layers, Echospace, Element 3D. More please! #Mochat8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

sorry for blowin up yer timelines (and everyone else). real time Nerd chat happing now!!! #mochat8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat I do want to say one thing. After Effects still slays IMO. It gave me a career so Thank you despite our requests.8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Does anyone have good tips on working with curves in the timeline? I feel constrained after getting used to C4D curves. #mochat8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The simple ability to change and add key commands. #mochat8:33 PM Jul 24th, 2012

for Multi user etc – IBC in Sept, will have some announcements from us. #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

you taking like Duik tools? #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like to see a grouping option so I don’t have to precomp but can still reduce the layers in my timeline. #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

guide layers that can be set numerically. right click and enter pixel value. allow guides to be copy and pasted between comps #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We thrive on the requests. It’s how we know what to make for you. #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Are there any plans to incorporate more ease options? Cubic, Quint, Exp, etc? (I do have Ease & Wizz.) #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

agreed. It would be great to be able to visualize a null and now what it’s for without hassle #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I love downloading new scripts. It’s like Christmas. #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You mean modify keyboard shortcuts? Have you used KeyEd Up? #mochat8:34 PM Jul 24th, 2012

thats not very far away steve! #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

it would be nice to see curves as a separate panel at the least #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Let me get to the meat of the subject and say, I hope #AE works in node based effects, solids, text, shapes & build up the flowchart #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thank you! The requests are awesome and want honest feedback. Wouldn’t have it any other way. #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Okay. I’m going to work on this. Can you guys point me to examples of how it works in other 3D? #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That’s what Zorro is excellent at. It is so much more than “folders”, which would need to be for contiguous layers. #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

AE Scripts is a fantastic resource. If anyone lives near NYC – buy Lloyd Alvarez beer. LOTS #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

A warning message when deleting a layer that is referenced buy an effect on another layer. such as particular or set matte etc etc #mochat8:35 PM Jul 24th, 2012

what r thoughts on a node like functionality? #Mochat8:36 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Seems like it could be another script opportunity. I might have to look at that, too. #mochat8:36 PM Jul 24th, 2012

What about scrubbable numeric values in expressions? #mochat8:36 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I want to make one node of effect, then apply it to multiple layers, or one solid, or one text style. Massive workflow improvement. #mochat8:36 PM Jul 24th, 2012

at that point, why not just use a “node-based” compositor? Nuke, Fusion, etc? #mochat8:36 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Nodal! yes! #MoChat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You wouldn’t need nodes, per se, to do that. What about just having effect instances? #mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d like for AE to just come preloaded with all these useful things that currently I have to find scripts for all over #mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

would like more control, ie. pre/post key looping, not separating XYZ every time to get handles, etc #Mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

who uses those for mograph!? #AErulez #MoChat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

re Nodes – our strength is being a creative tool. Never say never – but i think we need to improve to our strength #mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Can’t you do that with Expression Controls? #mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

When Pre comping layers the Pre comp should be the length of the layers not the full comp length. I use a script for this now. #mochat8:37 PM Jul 24th, 2012

But what, specifically, about a nodal interface? There are lots of pieces to that very simple phrase. #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

that’s all you boys! Beer him! #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

or at least include the extra scripts they have on the site. #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

in c4d you can set null shape to circle, sphere, whatever, adjust size, color. Very nice feature #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

you mean to use custom spline shapes that symbolize the null’s use? Like a 4-way arrow for xy move? #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Consider the bloat that we would suffer if we added every feature now provided by a script. Now you can pick and choose. #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Agreed. Nodes would be nice, but there’s other improvements I’d like to see first. #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I think that would work just fine, but visually having it node based makes much more sense. #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

yes… i use scripts too but should be some options in the dialog box #mochat8:38 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Node based expressions would add so much and gives an entry point into expressions #mochat8:39 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I agree that the Flowchart view could use some love. #mochat8:39 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That’s what I tend to do now, it’d just be nice to have it all in one place. #mochat8:39 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I have used them, for compositing 3D shots, not mograph. Fair enough 🙂 #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

how about noncontiguous and multiple track mattes. #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

like ability to zoom in and out like its not 1996? #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I wonder if someone would be able to write a custom UI plugin to handle that? #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thats an area where nodes could be really valuable though – make them graphical – not programmatic like now. #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

What can I say, we are visual people, us guys. #mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

absolutely! Would love to have a custom interface to pipe, parent, reference attributes project-wide #Mochat8:40 PM Jul 24th, 2012

LOL – you’ve been talking with 5tu. #mochat8:41 PM Jul 24th, 2012

not every script but the top few almost every AE user already has like ease&wizz, zorro. #mochat8:41 PM Jul 24th, 2012

i feel like the effects panel could benefit the most from having a nodal view since they can accept multiple inputs, mattes etc #mochat8:41 PM Jul 24th, 2012

would be awesome if that interface would be available to 3rd party deva as well. Imagine Particular w that interface #Mochat8:41 PM Jul 24th, 2012

effect instancing as well. revise one node to trickle down to many #MoChat8:41 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’m a big immigration fan #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

just because a really good feature is a script doesn’t mean that is shouldn’t ever be integrated into AE #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

lots of useful scripts out there. I think this is a plus for AE users and it gives adobe insight into what users want. #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I use neither of those 😉 #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

another benefit of scratchpad v2 🙂 #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Since we’re talking about feedback to us from you, I want to make sure that everyone is opted in to this: http://t.co/izovfbQi #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Totally agreed. #mochat8:42 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I cant tell you how many times I have had to change something (effect, text, etc) on 30 comps. Would love that. #mochat8:43 PM Jul 24th, 2012

if the Flowchart went from a visual map to (even a limited) node Flowchart you’re cooking with fire #mochat8:43 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Do you ever use the Duplicate with Connections script? #mochat8:44 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Is there a way to make a layer not affected by a layer above it? Adjustment layers ext.? #mochat8:44 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d rate that a tie with a quick Open GL world grid – the new Point Cloud effect adds one & it’s terrific #Mochat8:44 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Also on the subject of feedback: I want to assure everyone that a real person reads all feature requests. Me. http://t.co/7yGw0ugD #mochat8:44 PM Jul 24th, 2012

maybe effect groups like Effector groups in c4d? #mochat8:45 PM Jul 24th, 2012

No, and you tell me more. Right now. #mochat8:45 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You mean Pixel Cloud? #mochat8:45 PM Jul 24th, 2012

http://t.co/gIrBcLYG #mochat8:45 PM Jul 24th, 2012

http://t.co/Ccb7XVcH here is an image of a 3D character rig with several selection ctrls (null w/ spline parented) #mochat8:46 PM Jul 24th, 2012

anyone interested in some simple shapes and deformers for the raytrace renderer? or am i the only one using it 🙂 #mochat8:47 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Here’s a question: What is the last thing in After Effects that made you yell at your computer (or us)? #mochat8:47 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thanks! If it’s not already, I’ll see if I can cull together a script to make these. #mochat8:47 PM Jul 24th, 2012

BTW – working with DPX reader plugin for Ae that does all bit depths plus Alpha: http://t.co/TVnJ25Jm #mochat8:47 PM Jul 24th, 2012

i’d like some texture/style presets for 3d text. #mochat8:47 PM Jul 24th, 2012

why did you change the apple-m keyboard shortcut! #mochat8:48 PM Jul 24th, 2012

That sheep noise. #mochat8:48 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We didn’t. You just have the Use System Shortcuts preference enabled. #mochat8:48 PM Jul 24th, 2012

the PNGIO error I keep getting when working with png sequences out of c4d & frustration with multiprocessing #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

im surprised no one has released any #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

YES! RT : why did you change the apple-m keyboard shortcut! #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I got used to cmd-? #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We didn’t. You just have the Use System Shortcuts preference enabled. #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Do people still use that over Add to Render Queue? Why? #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

dealing with OPEN EXRS!! #mochat8:49 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The dynamic link with Premiere Pro. It could be so AMAZING but is not quite there. It could be a Smoke killer. #mochat8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat The last thing that made me yell at adobe af was the cs5 version is not able for 32 bit users! -.-8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

render instances hanging around after quit/crash , eating up ram. Yes i have the latest update. restart only option #MoChat8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Going to have to toy around with this asap. Thanks for that link #mochat8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

cause. #mochat8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

: Here’s a question: What is the last thing in After Effects that made you yell at your computer (or us)? #mochat”. renderfails!8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

“After Effects encountered a strange situation” – wtf #mochat8:50 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Cache in Ae CS6 helps with Dynamic link ALOT #mochat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Ditto : dealing with OPEN EXRS!! #mochat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Here’s a page with instructions on changing render sounds: http://t.co/0utV0fi3 #mochat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

with the smoke Beta crashing left and right (not just me), i think its a doozy! #MoChat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

it would be awesome if we could make open exrs with multiple channels. #mochat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Are you using CS6. Performance is much better. #mochat8:51 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Open EXRs – heard loud and clear #mochat8:52 PM Jul 24th, 2012

oh, i remember, setting a color for a shape layer to an overbright value, but when clicking to bring up dialog box doesnt show value #mochat8:52 PM Jul 24th, 2012

hahaha “strange situation”. That’s the best AE error! #mochat8:52 PM Jul 24th, 2012

No don’t tell people how to do that! Last time changed my render sound to a whole Nicki Minaj song! #mochat8:52 PM Jul 24th, 2012

http://t.co/n8LauuX9 #mochat8:53 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I wonder if there’s an “uncomfortable situation” error? #mochat8:53 PM Jul 24th, 2012

You can with ProEXR: http://t.co/j4tKCA6J #mochat8:53 PM Jul 24th, 2012

No don’t tell people how to do that! Last time changed my render sound to a whole Nicki Minaj song! #mochat8:53 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Still on CS5.5. Will have to save for CS6 (to be fair everything on AE side is always great 🙂 PrPro… not so much.) #mochat8:53 PM Jul 24th, 2012

it’d be quicker to get your head around other’s projects with nodal too. if they are tidy or not #MoChat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

trying to figure out how to pick whip font choice and kerning values to multiple pieces of text #Mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I have a 120 SSD dedicated to the new cache feature in cs6, i set it to max at 90gb and it says there’s not enough space #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

“After Effects is feeling anxious.” #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d love it if I could use Dynamic Link collaboratively across multiple machines. #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

: dealing with OPEN EXRS!! #mochat” yes with multi layers.8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

is this right place to discuss how some features in AE works differently when used from other Adobe Apps (PPro & AME)? #MOCHAT8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

have the passes available out of a raytrace comp such as normals, spec, etc #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

MOCHAT | I would love to see a slider function on snapshot.Click+hold ‘show snapshot’ drag left/right= A/B wipe. Up and down opacity #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I mean the text style more or less. #mochat8:54 PM Jul 24th, 2012

“After Effects is wondering if your wife/gf is getting jealous of all the time you spend with it.” #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

5 more minutes of #MoChat Let’s wrap up any last questions for & .8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Make sure your prefs weren’t reset. It will default back to a different drive #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Now, with only a few minutes left in #mochat, another question: What should we do more of / keep doing? #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Fire away #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

A/B compare would be great for snapshots! #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Good idea. #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Is there a reason you can only zoom in so far in orthographic views? Seems like you can only zoom in so far then the cam goes crazy. #mochat8:55 PM Jul 24th, 2012

and a few months after i met my lady she asked me “who’s maya!” #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

windows 7, with 12 idle background render threads constantly crashing and throwing up system errors, that made me angry #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Keep being awesome, and supportive!! #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

it’s the “I wouldn’t do that if I were you…” error #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

keep being awesome! #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

have you downloaded the new ProEXR plugin yet? It’s a lot faster! #Mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

AE can hold up to 5 snapshots at a time. Not quite A/B compare, but still handy! Shift+F5 – 8 #mochat8:56 PM Jul 24th, 2012

render multiple cameras at the same time? render orthographic views.. .anyone interested? #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Organization is key. Goes hand and hand with good design skills & taste IMO #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Agreed – would make me angry too. Heard. #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

yes #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Indeed. Much better. RT : have you downloaded the new ProEXR plugin yet? It’s a lot faster! #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

thanks , in particular I am wondering why I import a 3D Raytrace comp into PPro, it only renders on CPU? #MOCHAT8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

love the access and youre willing to put up with us complaining nerds 🙂 #mochat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

“borrow” liberally from other apps. you know your audience. more #C4D synergy. #MoChat8:57 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We ARE complaining nerds, so you fit right in. 😉 #mochat8:58 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat I would like to see proxy’s working via the Creative Cloud so I can work w/ AE on Windows 8 Surfaces syncing between my computers8:58 PM Jul 24th, 2012

The steps AE has taken with 3D integration and tracking with Mocha are great… want to hold off on C4D if I can. #mochat8:58 PM Jul 24th, 2012

, I do have a supported Cuda card, and what is even more weird is the entire comp was already rendered to disk. #MOCHAT8:59 PM Jul 24th, 2012

probably due to this http://t.co/5zPqupUd #mochat8:59 PM Jul 24th, 2012

keep pushing the JDIs – bullet point features are great but pipeline, workflow, & interface improvements are felt everyday #Mochat8:59 PM Jul 24th, 2012

#mochat yes, again on the xpresso style expressions, anyone?8:59 PM Jul 24th, 2012

keep making new releases worth getting. Keep challenging & pushing the limits. No fluffed releases. #mochat 🙂8:59 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We’re just about done with #mochat tonight. I want to give a special thanks to & for being gracious & participating.9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

“What should we do more of / keep doing?” – keep rocking! CS6 is a blast to use 🙂 #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Remember to submit any ideas officially to Adobe: http://t.co/1kU9IawZ #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Headless AFter Effects doesn’t use GPU. Applies to aerender, Dynamic Link, etc. #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thanks for hanging out with us folks – have to sign off for some din-din 🙂 #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

thanks and #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thanks for coming out tonight, everyone. Keep the conversation going. #mochat9:00 PM Jul 24th, 2012

indeed. Less Fluff. More assimilation of highly used scripts and functionality requests, even the subtle ones #mochat9:01 PM Jul 24th, 2012

I’d say borrow from Nuke… but maybe I’m not your audience. :-/ #mochat9:01 PM Jul 24th, 2012

As always, transcription will be up on tomorrow. This one got busy, so it might take a little time to compile. #mochat9:01 PM Jul 24th, 2012

What he said. #mochat9:02 PM Jul 24th, 2012

Thanks , though since it was already rendered to disk shouldn’t it have read from the disk cache instead re-rendering? #MOCHAT9:02 PM Jul 24th, 2012

We’ll check transcript that Paul posts & record requests from tonight. Other times, here’s what works best: http://t.co/7yGw0ugD #mochat9:02 PM Jul 24th, 2012
